Best Massage Practices and Sleeping Positions With Breast Implants

Many patients wonder what is the best sleeping position after breast enhancement and if things like massage will have an impact on their final results. Taking the best care of yourself after your breast augmentation surgery will help your implants stay in their intended position for the most aesthetically pleasing outcome while you heal. Consider these tips from Dr. Do at the Aesthetic Surgery Institute for gentle massage techniques and for sleeping after surgery.

It is very important to get plenty of sleep after a breast augmentation or other surgery. While you are sleeping, your body can devote all of its resources to healing. Resting allows tissues to reconnect and additional blood flow allows swelling and discomfort to resolve more quickly. We suggest at least eight hours of sleep at night and naps during the day.

The best sleeping position after breast augmentation is on your back, with your shoulders elevated slightly. This position helps reduce swelling and fluid buildup. After a few days have passed and the swelling subsides, you can sleep flat on your back. For at least two weeks after your surgery you should not sleep on your side or stomach.

Why Is It Important to Sleep on Your Back After Surgery?

Sleeping on your stomach or side can put pressure on your breast implants and sutures, and it might cause shifting or stretching that increases scarring and can affect the final results. Continue sleeping on your back as long as your doctor recommends. If you are a habitual side sleeper and you are healing well, you can usually resume sleeping on your side after about two weeks, but you should avoid sleeping on your stomach for four weeks.

Use pillows or rolled towels to help you stay on your back. If you wake up in the wrong sleeping position after breast augmentation, make a point to return to your back and replace your pillows or wedges. Some patients find it easier to stay on their back by sleeping in a comfortable recliner for the first few days.

Your doctor should give you specific advice about breast implant massage during your recovery. Massage can help speed recovery for breast augmentation patients by:

  • Improving circulation
  • Alleviating swelling and fluid retention
  • Improving muscle and skin tightness
  • Reducing the risk of capsular contracture

As long as your cosmetic surgeon approves, having regular breast massages for the first three months is a good idea for a smooth recovery and relaxing therapy.

Beneficial Breast Implant Massage Techniques

Starting about two weeks after surgery, you can schedule full body massages that do not involve lying on your stomach. Let your massage therapist know about these limitations and ask if they know how to massage breast implants after surgery. Your massage can be done in a massage chair or lying on a table on your back.

Just like sleeping after surgery, you do not want to put too much pressure on your breast implants during a massage. If at any time you feel discomfort, let your massage therapist know. About six weeks after your surgery, when your doctor approves, you can lie on a massage table on your stomach again, although you may want to put a soft pillow under your chest for comfort.

Every Breast Augmentation Surgery Is Different

Each breast augmentation patient we see has different goals and reasons for choosing a cosmetic breast procedure in our Houston center. Some patients are concerned about sagging breasts after pregnancy or weight loss, while others have always wanted fuller breasts to balance their shape.

Some of our patients want to reduce the size of their breasts or reshape the nipple and areola for an uplifted appearance. Breast lifts can restore volume lost over time and create a more pleasing silhouette. By starting the process with a full understanding of your goals, we assess your unique needs and can recommend the best specific options for your surgery and recovery.

Our specific recommendations for exercise, massage, and sleeping after your surgery will depend on what kind of procedures you have had and the type of implants that were chosen. These might be silicone, saline, or gummy bear types, which have different properties. Your customized treatment plan will include a full guide to recovery and regular check-ins to make sure that your healing and the final results are as beautiful and natural as you envisioned.
