What Is a Brazilian Butt Lift?

A Brazilian butt lift (gluteal fat graft) is a fat transfer procedure that involves removing fat from your hips, abdomen, lower back, or thighs with liposuction and strategically injecting it into your buttocks. Because the procedure uses your own fat—not implants—the result is a natural augmentation.

A Brazilian butt lift not only makes your backside more prominent, it can also sculpt your thighs, hips, and waistline. When performed by a skilled surgeon, like Dr. Do, the procedure can improve the proportions of your entire lower body—and the results will last for many years.

Benefits of a Brazilian Butt Lift

Genetics plays a large role in determining where you store fat and the shape and proportion of your buttocks—it’s why many people simply are unable to achieve the look they want through exercise and diet alone. Brazilian butt lift surgery can help you get the look you want when your body won’t cooperate despite your best efforts.

Benefits of the procedure can include:

  • Adding fullness to your buttocks for a more youthful look
  • Enhancing lower body curves
  • Reducing unwanted fat deposits on hips, thighs, and belly
  • Improving overall lower body appearance
  • Balancing upper and lower body proportions
  • Improving self-esteem and confidence
  • Improving the way clothes fit

Am I a Candidate for Brazilian Butt Lift Surgery?

A significant advantage of Brazilian butt lift surgery is that it increases the size of your rear without implants. The procedure is a good option for many people; however, those who are very lean may not have enough fat reserves in the thighs, belly, and hips for the procedure.

In general, you’re considered a good candidate if you want to avoid implants and you meet the following criteria:

  • You have healthy skin with good tone in your hips and buttocks.
  • You have adequate fat stores in other areas of the body for injection into the buttocks.
  • You are willing and able to avoid sitting and lying directly on your buttocks for several weeks after surgery.

The Procedure

Here is a basic overview of Brazilian butt lift surgery. Dr. Do performs the procedure on an outpatient basis (meaning no hospitalization is required):

  1. Our highly-trained team will administer general anesthesia or IV sedation plus local anesthesia. You will not feel anything during surgery.
  2. Dr. Do will remove fat from your hips, thighs, abdomen or lower back with liposuction.
  3. The extracted fat will be purified and prepared for transfer.
  4. Dr. Do will strategically inject the harvested fat into different points in your buttocks to increase volume and shape.

Recovery and What to Expect from the Surgery

After surgery you can expect to have some pain and soreness. This is completely normal and is easily controlled with pain medication.

You won’t be able to sit down (except when using the toilet) or lie down with pressure on your buttocks for around 2 weeks. You will need to sleep on your stomach or side; if you normally sleep on your back, using pillows can help prevent you from turning onto your back while you sleep.

After a couple weeks Dr. Do will allow you to resume sitting, either on a donut-shaped pillow or with a pillow under your thighs. This helps reduce the amount of direct pressure on your buttocks. You won’t be able to resume normal sitting for about 8 weeks after surgery.

Most patients are able to go back to work within 10 to 14 days of surgery.

The results of Brazilian butt lift surgery can last for many years. Fat removed with liposuction will not return to those areas, and fat cells that survive the transfer will remain there for years (it’s normal for some fat cells to die after surgery and be expelled naturally by the body).

It usually takes about 6 months for residual swelling to go away completely. It’s around this time—around 6 months post-surgery—that you’ll see the full impact of your new curvier backside and improved lower body proportions.

The Importance of Finding an Experienced, Skilled Surgeon

It’s vital to find an experienced, board-certified surgeon to perform your surgery, as Brazilian butt lift surgery is riskier than other procedures. The risks of Brazilian buttock augmentation include fat embolism, which is when fat is accidentally injected into a large vessel; a fat embolism can travel to the lungs and cause a stroke. The importance of using an experienced surgeon cannot be overstated.

Dr. Do is a skilled, double board-certified surgeon who has an acute understanding of human anatomy and has performed more than 10,000 surgeries. He understands Brazilian butt lift complications and does everything possible to help minimize Brazilian butt lift risks for his patients. He also has a highly-developed eye for aesthetic detail and extensive experience in fat transfer techniques.
