Recovery After Breast Augmentation Surgery
February 26, 2018
According to the American Society of cosmetic surgeons, breast augmentation is the top cosmetic surgery in the nation, with about 300,000 women undergoing the procedure each year. It can be a positive step for a woman, improving her self-esteem, confidence, and body-image, but it’s also a serious surgery. Here’s what to expect in the days that follow your breast augmentation surgery.
- You’ll be able to go home after an hour or so. When your surgery is over, you’ll be moved to a recovery area, where you’ll be closely monitored. During this recovery time, your breasts will be wrapped in gauze dressings, with an elastic bandage or support bra providing support and minimizing swelling. Once your doctor determines that you are stable for discharge, you’ll be allowed to go home.
- Your doctor will give you instructions and prescriptions. Follow all of your doctor’s instructions closely. Your particular postoperative instructions may vary from those some other people have received, but your doctor’s instructions are the ones you should heed. You’ll probably be prescribed pain pills and an antibiotic, and a follow-up appointment will be scheduled.
- Support is important. It’s important to wear whichever support garment you’re instructed to wear, either a bra or an elastic band called a bandeau, around the clock. Your surgeon may instruct you to clean your incision sites and apply ointment or may instruct you to leave the tape or bandage on at all times.
- Ease into activities gradually. During the first several days, there is a risk that you could bleed into the pockets around the breast implants. That’s why it’s imperative that you rest and take it easy. Your pain may be acute at first, but after a few days, it will subside. Even after that, though, you may experience soreness and swelling that lasts for a few weeks. Make sure to ask your doctor before resuming your normal activity level or participating in exercise.
