In this method, we identify a donor site, usually the back of the head, where we will remove donor hair follicles that will then be transplanted to the thinning or bald area. The donor follicles are removed from the head and prepped for placement by trimming into strips containing one to four follicles. The donor hair is then expertly placed by our doctor to produce natural looking results that thoroughly cover the thinning area.
FUE is similar to the FUT procedure, but it does not require a large incision across the donor site. Instead, FUE uses very precise and advanced technology to make tiny circular incisions around each donor follicle. They are then placed in the balding area in the same way that the donor hairs are placed in the FUT procedure and produce a natural result with minimal invasiveness.

Prior to the ARTAS® robotic system, the NeoGraft® device was one of the most commonly used hair transplant systems on the market. The NeoGraft® is a handheld device that is operated by a medical professional to harvest donor hairs. But how do the two technologies stack up? We’re here to give you the rundown of both the ARTAS® and the NeoGraft®, giving you the information you need:
The Handheld NeoGraft® Device
Both the NeoGraft® and the ARTAS® utilize the same FUE method of hair transplants, they just go about it a little differently. The NeoGraft® uses air pressure and suction to remove hair follicles from the donor site, a process which is done entirely by hand. The device fits over the operator’s electronic punch tool and aids them in harvesting the donor hairs. However, about 1,500 to 2,000 individual grafts must be removed in each procedure, risking fatigue of the operator’s hand. While the device was designed to help speed up the process and reduce fatigue of the operator, it still relies solely on his or her skill and ability. That means there’s much more room for human error when using the NeoGraft® device. Not to mention that many practices allow technicians to complete this part of the procedure instead of a doctor. The harvesting of donor hairs is a very delicate and precise part of the procedure and should always be completed by a surgeon or at least under the supervision of one.
The ARTAS® Robot Hair Transplant System
This robotic doctor’s assistant produces much more precise results and eliminates the worry of operator hand fatigue. Unlike the NeoGraft®, which is entirely hand-operated, the ARTAS® uses an advanced computer program and the skills of a qualified surgeon to expertly harvest donor hairs. Even though the harvesting itself is performed by the robot, the surgeon is in complete control during the entire process. Utilizing advanced technology, the ARTAS® is able to map out the entire donor site and selects donor hairs following guidelines set by the doctor. The machine harvests sections that include one follicle or as many as four, depending on the parameters set up by the surgeon and can perform up to 1,000 grafts per hour. The ARTAS® stays within the donor area, choosing the best donor hairs and avoiding areas of scarring. This ensures that only the very best grafts are chosen. Since the machine does all the harvesting itself, precision and accuracy remain at the same level through the entire procedure, whereas in the NeoGraft® method accuracy may decline as the operator fatigues. While both are viable options for hair transplant procedures and both have seen success, the precision of the ARTAS® is unmatched by any other technology.
