WHAT IS BREAST REDUCTION?

Breast reduction surgery, also known as mammoplasty, is a procedure to reduce the size and weight of the breasts by removing excess fat, skin, and glandular tissue.

Women who have disproportionately large breasts often suffer from back pain, neck pain, or other unwanted physical symptoms, such as skin rashes. Breast reduction surgery can resolve these issues and typically results in lighter, perkier breasts with a more youthful appearance.

WHAT DOES A BREAST REDUCTION PROCEDURE INVOLVE?

During the breast reduction procedure, the surgeon makes small incisions and removes excess fat, glandular tissue, and skin from the breasts. Once the excess tissue and skin are removed, the surgeon repositions the skin and areola. Breast reduction surgery helps reduce the heaviness and size of the breasts to create a more proportional shape.

Breast reduction surgery is typically can take from 1-3 hours per breast. The procedure is performed in an outpatient surgery center, which means you can go home the same day.

BENEFITS OF BREAST REDUCTION

Breast reduction procedures can have both physical and emotional benefits. Disproportionately large breasts can lead to problems like chronic back pain, headaches, and low self-esteem. Benefits of breast reduction surgery can include:

  • Fewer headaches
  • Improved sleep
  • Easier breathing
  • Less muscle pain
  • Reduced anxiety or depression
  • Less skin irritation underneath breasts
  • More uplifted, youthful appearance
  • Improved self-esteem
  • Better fitting clothes
  • More aesthetic nipple and areola shape

BREAST REDUCTION RECOVERY

Immediately after breast reduction surgery you should expect to have bruising, swelling, and tenderness in the breasts. This is normal and should lessen over time. Most patients need only mild pain medications, if any.

Most patients can resume office work and normal errands around 7 days after surgery, and possibly sooner. You should avoid strenuous work and exercise, especially activities that involve heavy lifting, for a minimum of 2 weeks after surgery to allow proper healing. If your job is physically demanding, you may need to take some time off work to recover. Dr. Do will discuss these and other considerations during your free consultation.

AM I A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR BREAST REDUCTION?

Women and men in good physical health who don’t smoke are generally good candidates for breast reduction surgery. It’s important for candidates to have realistic expectations for the results that can be achieved with breast reduction surgery. During your consultation Dr. Do will help you know what results are realistic and answer all your questions about your breast reduction surgery in Houston, TX.

BREAST REDUCTION FAQs

Can I combine other procedures with a breast reduction?

Yes, in fact, many patients choose to have other cosmetic procedures in combination with a breast reduction, such as a breast lift. Dr. Do will advise you on which procedures can be combined with breast reduction surgery.

How much does breast reduction cost?

If you Google “breast reduction cost in Houston,” you’ll likely find a wide range of numbers.  Breast reduction surgery usually costs between $5,000 and $10,000. Breast reductions performed for medical reasons (for example, to alleviate back pain) may be partly or completely covered by medical insurance. We encourage patients to check with their insurance company to find out whether their plan covers breast reduction for medical reasons. Cosmetic procedures done in combination with a breast reduction, such as a breast lift, are not covered by medical insurance.

What are the risks involved with breast reduction?

As with any surgical procedure, there is a risk of bleeding, infection, nerve damage, loss of sensation, breast asymmetry, and scarring. In rare cases a woman will lose her ability to breastfeed. Choosing a skilled, qualified surgeon, like Dr. Do, can greatly reduce your risk of complications.

When can I go back to work?

The average recovery period is 7 days, but everyone recovers differently. How quickly you recover will also depend on whether you have other procedures done at the same time.

When can I resume wearing a bra after surgery?

If your incision is in the crease under your breast, you should expect this area to be inflamed and tender for a month or more. This could make wearing an underwire bra uncomfortable. Your breasts will also take some time to settle, so you should wait to be fitted for a new underwire bra for a couple of months. You may find it more comfortable to wear a stretchy post-operative surgery bra for several weeks after your surgery.
