Enhance Your Abdomen
A tummy tuck involves making the abdomen thinner and firmer by removing
extra skin and fat. This procedure can help restore weakened muscles in
the abdominal area, allowing your profile to remain smoother and firmer.
Exercise and weight control alone don’t work for everyone to achieve
a flat abdomen. This is where our expertise can help you with a tummy tuck.
Several factors can cause your abdomen to protrude or sag, including:
- Previous surgeries
- Extensive weight fluctuations
The results of a tummy tuck are permanent. However, it is important to
recognize that a tummy tuck is not a replacement for weight loss. Women
considering future pregnancies or planning significant weight loss should
postpone a tummy tuck. After your pregnancy, we do offer tummy tucks as
part of our comprehensive
Benefits of a Tummy Tuck
Along with improving your self-esteem and self-worth, a tummy tuck can
tighten the weak muscles that initially caused the issues you experienced
in the first place. It can also help reduce Stress Urinary Incontinence
and improve the tone of your abdomen. You might also find that your posture improves.
Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty)
An abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) is cosmetic surgery to improve the appearance
of your abdomen (flatter and firmer tummy). Excess fat and skin are removed
from the abdomen area in order to tighten the muscles and tissues of the
The tummy tuck procedure is particularly popular with new mums and with
those women who have lost a significant amount of weight and have been
left with excess, loose skin. The surgery is carried out under IV sedation
and is used to remove any excess skin and fatty tissue, reshape the area
and create a slimmer, smoother and tighter abdominal area. A tummy tuck
can be combined with liposuction for those women who are looking to achieve
a slimmer waistline.
Tummy tucks should not be thought of as a substitute for weight loss or
an exercise program. The procedure cannot correct stretch marks, although
these may be removed or somewhat improved if they are located on the areas
of excess skin that will be treated.
Abdominoplasty (Tummy tuck) The Operation:
Depending on how much fat and skin require removing, and the type of abdominal
reduction being carried out, the operation may take up to three hours
under IV sedation.
The procedure starts with an incision across the base of the abdomen, from
hip to hip, that generally follows the pubic lining (bikini line for women).
A triangular area of skin and underlying fat is removed, the umbilicus
is left attached on a stalk. A pocket is made underneath the skin and
fat of the upper abdomen as far as the ribs. The tummy muscles are tightened
to improve abdominal contour. The skin is then stretched downwards to
join the lower incision. A moon-shaped incision is made at the new site
of the umbilicus which is then sewn back in its new position.
Drainage tubes are placed under the skin to collect any excess fluid that
may accumulate. Hidden stitches are used which are dissolvable and do
not require removal. A compression garment may also be required to help
the healing. Immediately after abdominoplasty (tummy tuck), the abdominal
skin feels very tight and indeed it may be difficult to stand up straight
for the first few days.
Having a tummy tuck will give you a flatter, firmer tummy that is more
proportionate with your body shape. The changes can be permanent as long
as you maintain a healthy lifestyle and weight after your surgery.
Within a week or two of your procedure, swelling will begin to reduce and
you should be able to stand tall fully upright in 4 weeks time.
It may take up to 6 months for the swelling to subside completely to see
the full results of the abdominoplasty.
We recommend 2 – 3 weeks off work and avoid strenuous exercise for
at least 6 weeks.
